International Circulation: This meeting represents a strong cooperation between China and the AHA. What avenues of cooperation do you envisage for the future between the AHA and China?
Dr Arnett: We are delighted to be here again for the second year. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading cause of death worldwide so it is great that our two countries can partner on finding ways not only to treat but to prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke. So we look at this as a continuation of two years of progress in our working together towards this really important area.
International Circulation: What would you like to see from China in terms of its side of this ongoing cooperation?
Dr Arnett: The United Nations held a conference in September 2011 to address non-communicable diseases globally and so we are working with China to try to identify ways that we could set out to prevent and reduce cardiovascular diseases and we will be hosting a meeting in our scientific sessions in November to work through ways that you can find to effectively reduce cardiovascular disease at a very broad population level.
